The mission of the Charleston School of Law Trial Advocacy Board (TAB) is to prepare students to become ethical, experienced, & zealous lawyer-advocates.
Our Purpose
The purpose of the Charleston School of Law Trial Advocacy Board (TAB) is to facilitate and promote in the development of oral advocacy skills within the courtroom. The TAB fulfills this purpose through practice and participation in external competitions throughout the United States against other law schools. TAB members are selected annually by participating in the TAB Internal Competition that is held in the fall semester.

Executive Board 2019 - 2020
David Gentry, 3LPresidentDavid describes himself as meticulous, loyal, & open-minded. He received a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice with a minor in Criminal Law,Master of Criminal Justice, & Master of Public Administration from Colorado State University at Colorado Springs. In addition to TAB, David is the Treasurer of Phi Delta Phi Honor International Legal Honor Society and a member of Entertainment Arts & Sports Law and Children's Advocacy & Family Law Society. David is the 2018 Internal Competition Champion along with his co-counsel & was awarded Best Direct Examination at the Internal Competition. He also was a 2019 TYLA & South Texas competitor.

ShelbyAnn Johnson, 3LVice President of Internal CompetitionShelbyAnn is intuitive, energetic, & compassionate. She knew at a young age she wanted to be a voice for the voiceless & a hand for those who need help. She graduated from the University of Kentucky with a double major in International Studies & Spanish with a minor in Political Science. She is the 2018 Internal Competition Runner-Up along with her co-counsel & placed in the Final Four at the AAJ Competition in Raleigh, North Carolina, in March 2019.

Alexis Kovolenko, 3LVice President of External CompetitionsAlexis is passionate, optimistic, & hardworking. She graduated from East Carolina University with a degrees in Political Science & History. She came to law school because she wants to be a trial attorney & be able to give others the defense they need & deserve. She is the 2018 Internal Competition Runner-Up along with her co-counsel, awarded Best Closing Argument at the Internal Competition, & was a 2019 TYLA competitor.

Kelly Barber, 3LVice President of Judge & Faculty RelationsKelly is dedicated, observant, & consistent. She graduated from Georgia State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science with a concentration in Pre-Law. All of her life she believed that she wanted to become a doctor, but shortly after attending undergraduate school she knew the medical field was not for her. During her sophomore year she decided join her school's mock trial team, changing her
major from Biology to Political Science. She says she feels most comfortable when she is in the courtroom. Kelly was awarded Best Cross Examination at the 2018 Internal Competition. In addition to TAB, she is also a member of the Moot Court Board & a student liaison for the Charleston County Bar. She competed in the AAJ Competition in Raleigh, North Carolina, in March 2019. |
Beverly Bolyard, 3LVice President of Media RelationsBev is empathetic, dependable, & creative. She graduated from Marshall University with a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education Social Studies 5-Adult and West Virginia University with a Master of Arts in Curriculum & Instruction. Before coming to law school, she was a middle school social studies teacher in rural West Virginia for three years. In addition to being on TAB, she is a student liaison for the Charleston County Bar, President of the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund, President of the South Carolina Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers Student Division, Secretary of the Environmental Law Society, a former Legal Research & Writing Fellow, & a participant in the Summer Advocacy Institute where she utilized the SC Student Practice Rule to appear on the record various times in court proceedings, negotiating plea deals, and even cross examining a victim during a bench trial at Folly Beach under supervising attorneys. She competed in the AAJ Competition in Raleigh, North Carolina, in March 2019 & the Palmetto State Classic Competition in October 2019 where her team won the Professionalism Award.
